Chelsea winger Charly Musonda was nearly ‘left on the shelf’ during the transfer window.

The young winger was left out of Chelsea’s 25 man Premier League squad and ended up making a deadline day move to Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

The lack of interest in the winger was a direct result of his poor spell in Scotland with Celtic earlier this year.

Musonda has long been one of Chelsea’s top prospects.

He impressed on a loan spell for Real Betis in La Liga in 2016/17 and finally made his debut for Chelsea last August.

On the rise, another successful loan spell at Celtic would have catapulted him further towards the first team.

Instead the winger is further away from the Chelsea first team than ever.

Charly Musonda of Celtic is seen during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Heart of Midlothian at Celtic Park on January 30, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He made only four league appearances for Celtic and failed to win over manager Brendan Rodgers, returning to Stamford Bridge with his reputation dented.

His move to Vitesse highlighted just how damaging his failure in Scotland was, with Chelsea having to pull strings to get him a move.

Chelsea have strong links with the Dutch club and have sent numerous players to Vitesse over the last few years.

Of those, rarely have any gone onto play regular football for the Chelsea first team.

Musonda will be playing for his future in Holland. His Chelsea chance may never come, but he can restore his reputation and generate more interest in his service for the future.
