Liverpool are interested in signing Aaron Long from New York Red Bulls in the final days of the January transfer window, according to ESPN.
It has been reported that Liverpool want to secure the services of the USA international central defender on a loan deal.
The defending Premier League champions are reportedly looking for a new centre-back due to the problems they have at the moment.
The report in ESPN, which was published at 1:57pm yesterday, comes just two days after Sky Sports claimed that the Red Bulls are open to sending the defender out on loan.
The report published on January 27 stated that the Red Bulls will approve a short-term deal with the option to make it permanent, with Major League Soccer suspended until April at least.
Need for a centre-back
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term injury absentees, while Joel Matip picked up an injury against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening and Fabinho was also missing.
Jordan Henderson has had to play in defence on occasions this season, and it would make sense for Liverpool to bring in a defender for the next few months.
Long has played 18 times for the USA national football team and has featured in over 100 games for the Red Bulls.
Former Bolton Wanderers and USA international midfielder Stuart Holden rates the 28-year-old highly, and said in 2019 that he can be a success in a top league in Europe, as shown below.
