Wolverhampton Wanderers made a bid for Oussama Idrissi, but the winger simply could not turn down Sevilla once the Europa League champions came calling, as he told Estadio Deportivo.

With Wolves’ left wing looking a little bare following Diogo Jota’s shock move to Liverpool, the Molineux outfit turned to a man who came close to firing AZ Alkmaar to only the third Eredivisie triumph in their history – until the Dutch football season was curtailed in April of course.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Wolves made a £15 million bid for the Morocco international.

But, while one of the most ambitious sporting projects in the game is well underway in the Black Country, Wolves were once again pipped to the post by a Sevilla side who knocked them out of the Europa League in the quarter-final stage two months ago.

“I am very happy to arrive at Sevilla, a club with a lot of history,” explained Idrissi, naming Andalusian legend Jesus Navas as a personal inspiration.

“I had other offers but in the end I did not take them into account because Sevilla is a great club, a very important club and I wanted to be with these players.

“Three years ago, I saw the magnificent atmosphere in the stadium and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It wasn’t difficult going to Sevilla because it was where I wanted to be.”

Idrissi – a right-footed Arjen Robben in many ways who has made a career out of cutting inside from the left to fire shots at goal – scored 17 goals and produced a further 10 assists in his final season at AZ.

This already has the makings of another Monchi masterstroke.
