Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has told the Shields Gazette that he hopes to stay at St. James’ Park despite a disappointing season in front of goal.
The Serbian striker, signed from Anderlecht in the summer of 2015, hit nine goals in 34 Premier League games last season, giving fans hope that he could fire the Magpies back to the top flight.
Mitrovic, 22, may have had offers to leave Newcastle last summer, but he stayed loyal to Rafael Bentiez’s men, helping the club clinch promotion to the Premier League in a strong campaign from the Magpies.
However, Mitrovic’s personal fortunes haven’t been too great. The burly striker has spent the majority of the season serving as Newcastle’s second-choice striker behind Dwight Gayle, and his goal tally isn’t much to write home about as a result.

With just four goals in 23 Championship appearances – two of which came in one game against Preston North End back in October – Mitrovic has struggled to take his chances, and has scored just once in the last 17 games in all competitions.
Some fans want to see a new striker brought in over the summer, which could push Mitrovic further down the pecking order; a possible problem for the striker given his international ambitions with Serbia.

However, it seems that Mitrovic has no intention of leaving Tyneside, as he admitted that he hopes to remain with the club when asked by the Shields Gazette whether he wants to stay at St. James’ Park.
Mitrovic noted that he is happy with Newcastle but will see what the summer holds, after he has finished the Championship season and represented Serbia.
“Hopefully,” said Mitrovic. “We have to finish these two games, then I have the international team and then I will go on vacation. I will leave this to my father and my brother to see. I hope so, I’m happy here, but we’ll see,” he added.
