Speaking on the House of Champions Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Arsenal and the recent reports stating that they’re interested in a summer move for Declan Rice.
The Times reported that the north London club have made Rice their top summer target now, and according to Romano, there is some truth in these rumours.
Indeed, the journalist says that Arsenal discussed Rice internally in a transfer meeting that they had after missing out on Mykhaylo Mudryk last weekend.
Arsenal decided on Rice after Mudryk
Romano shared what he heard about this meeting.
“For Declan Rice it’s something we have to follow in the summer. In January he’s not leaving West Ham. It’s true that internally Arsenal are discussing Declan Rice. I’m told that right after Mudryk joined Chelsea they had a meeting planning for the present with Trossard, Kiwior and more and the future, and Declan Rice was mentioned as a player as a possibility and a player they really like. They’re not speaking to West Ham, it’s an internal idea,” Romano said.
Blessing in disguise
Missing out on Mudryk may well prove to be a blessing in disguise if Arsenal now go on to sign Rice with that money.
Yes, Mudryk looks a talent, but there’s a huge difference between signing a player from the Ukrainian league who may not start over Gabriel Martinelli and signing an England international who has proven his worth at this level for years.
Simply put, Rice is a safer, and arguably more important, signing that Mudryk, and if this is one of the by-products of losing out on the Ukrainian winger, then Arsenal may look back at Chelsea’s hijack as a blessing in hindsight.
The Gunners may, somehow, turn out to be the big winners from this situation.
