Gary Mackay-Steven’s Celtic future could be in doubt this summer.
Gary Mackay Steven celebrates after scoring for Celtic
Celtic have enjoyed a remarkable season under Brendan Rodgers, winning the Scottish Premiership title – their sixth in a row – without even losing a game.
With just six points dropped over the course of the season with three draws in 32 games, Celtic have blitzed their way to the title, and given that they have already won the Scottish League Cup and are into the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, Rodgers could be moving towards an unbeaten domestic season.
Changes will inevitably arrive this summer, and whilst there are some players who Celtic will look to keep hold of – such as Kieran Tierney, Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Dembele – but others will be at risk of being moved on.
Out of contract players such as Kris Commons, Efe Ambrose and Emilio Izaguirre look set to move on, and other under contract players may be sold too, with Gary Mackay-Steven particularly at risk.
The winger, signed from Dundee United by Ronny Deila in January 2015, made a strong start to life with the Bhoys, scoring four goals in his first 15 games, before notching six goals in 37 appearances under Deila last term.
However, his fortunes under Rodgers have been much different. The 27-year-old has started just five times in all competitions this season, with only ten starts to his name in a frustrating campaign.
Celtic’s Gary Mackay-Steven looks dejected after a missed chance
Mackay-Steven, formerly of Liverpool, will want to play first-team football next season, and with Celtic having options such as Scott Sinclair and James Forrest – as well as an expected signing after Patrick Roberts returns to Manchester City – Mackay-Steven could be sold this summer.
Other players such as Logan Bailly, Nir Bitton, Scott Allan and Nadir Ciftci could also be at risk, but Mackay-Steven’s future looks bleak, and a parting of the ways this summer may be the best for all parties.
