Tottenham have been linked to Jonny Evans.

Paul Merson infamously criticised Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez last summer by insisting he had ‘never heard of him’.

Casually dismissing the £42 million signing of the Colombian from Ajax, Merson exposed himself to ridicule with his comments.

But as Tottenham are linked with a new defender, Jonny Evans [via The Telegraph], the Northern Ireland international is a player who Merson has huge admiration for.

Merson has been on record praising Evans through the season several times.

Back in August he hailed Evans as a better defender than Manchester City’s £50 million man John Stones.

He told SkySports: “He’s a top centre-half, a proper centre-half.

“If you asked me today who I’d have in my team: Evans or Stones? I’d have Jonny Evans.”

In January he said that Evans was a player he wanted to see Arsenal sign in the transfer window.

He was quoted by The Express: “How have you not got Jonny Evans out of West Brom?”

Spurs are considering signing Evans for just £3 million, a clause he will be available for if West Bromwich Albion are relegated.

That will be a bargain in any context, and unlike the way he dismissed Sanchez last summer, Merson would only have kind things to say about Tottenham signing the centre-back.
