Carlos Carvalhal warned last week that Sheffield Wednesday do not have money to spend on January transfers, but hinted his side could still do ‘little things’ when the transfer window reopens.
Reading between the lines, one suspects that further loan deals could be on the cards, after temporary moves for Aiden McGeady and Callum McManaman in previous campaigns.
Even with George Boyd and Fernando Forestieri due back, another winger will feature highly on Wednesday fans’ Christmas lists, and Brighton could have one available for hire, according to their manager Chris Hughton (the Argus).
Jiri Skalak has only played 194 minutes for Brighton’s first team this season, but his record before then should be enough to make a club such as Wednesday – who are (almost) devoid of creativity – sit up and take note.
In that time, Skalak – who you may remember being consoled by Czech Republic colleague Daniel Pudil after the play-off semi-finals of two seasons ago – made 32 Championship starts, scored two goals and created another 12 for his teammates, the type of service the Owls’ shot-shy strike force can only dream about.
And after Hughton’s admission, Wednesday, surely, will be among those to register an interest.
