Thomas Meunier has chosen to join German giants Borussia Dortmund despite recently holding talks over a potential switch to Tottenham Hotspur, according to Belgian publication RTBF.
Just 24 hours ago, Jose Mourinho might have hoped that an early breakthrough had been reached in his pursuit of bargain summer signings.
According to the Express, Spurs had opened talks with Belgium international Meunier, seemingly closing in on the signing of a man who Mourinho has wanted ever since he took over at north London.
Considering that Spurs are both short of cash, and short of top-drawer right-backs, the chance to sign PSG’s Ligue 1 champion on a free transfer felt like an opportunity that simply could not be missed.
But try as they might, it seems that both Tottenham and Mourinho are set to be disappointed.
Dortmund have been linked with a move for Meunier since the turn of the year with one of the most technically gifted full-backs in the game lined up to replace Achraf Hakimi once he returns to Real Madrid.
And, according to RTBF, Meunier will be wearing that rather fetching yellow and black shirt when 2020/21 kicks off.
The soon-to-be free-agent has chosen Germany over London, delivering a sizeable blow to Tottenham’s summer plans.
Mourinho has already admitted that there will not be ‘rivers’ of money to spend at a cash-strapped Spurs side this summer.
And considering that the likes of Youcef Atal and Max Aarons are going to cost at least £30 million, Tottenham fans may have another season of Serge Aurier to look forward to.
