Tottenham Hotspur knew what they were getting into with Toby Alderweireld.

Tottenham Hotspur are battling to keep Toby Alderweireld amid growing speculation linking the defender with Manchester United.
The Belgian’s determination to move away from Spurs has caused disappointment to Tottenham fans, especially as they have not yet signed a replacement this summer – or any players at all.
Yet when it comes to Alderweireld, Tottenham should not and cannot be surprised.
This goes back to when they signed him, when Alderweireld ruthlessly turned his back on Southampton to join Spurs.

Alderweireld starred for Southampton in 2014/15 on loan after an unsuccessful spell at Atletico Madrid.
The stint at St Mary’s kickstarted his career and prompted a battle for his services.
Southampton were desperate to sign him permanently, before Tottenham swooped in.
Alderweireld discarded feelings of loyalty towards the Saints, and moved to Tottenham for what he felt was a better opportunity.

This scenario is slightly different, Alderweireld has spent three years at Spurs as opposed to one at Southampton.
Yet clearly the defender has his own agenda, his own ambitions, and wants to put his own career ahead of a particular club’s ambitions and goals.
It is not pleasant for Spurs if he forces a move, but they knew what they were getting into when they signed the Belgian.
