Well, Cody Gakpo to Liverpool is officially on now.
In a shock turn of events, PSV Eindhoven announced on Boxing Day [Sky] that they had struck an agreement with the Reds for Gakpo.
The Netherlands international had been heavily linked to Manchester United and Arsenal, but it’s Liverpool who are about to win the race it would seem.
But interestingly, the Reds’ January spending might not end with the 23-year-old.
That’s because in Italy, Liverpool are reportedly in ‘pole position’ to sign another attacker.
According to Calciomercato, Jurgen Klopp’s side are winning the race to sign Napoli forward Hirving Lozano.
The Mexico international is only contracted to the Serie A outfit until 2024.
And the Italian publication states that although a number of Premier League clubs have been keen admirers, it’s the Anfield side that are in prime position.
Could Liverpool sign Gakpo and Lozano?
Well in theory, yes.
Liverpool were already short on wide options and that was before Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota got injured, being ruled out until March and February respectively.
And truthfully, the German manager, who lost Sadio Mane and Takumi Minamino last summer without replacing either of them, might need a second option just to beef up the squad in terms of depth.
Lozano cost Napoli £38 million in 2019 [GOAL] but with his contract expiring in 18 months, this wouldn’t break the bank for Liverpool and it’ll be interesting to see if Gakpo could be followed to Merseyside by another figure.
