It was reported on Monday evening that Ilkay Gundogan is set to leave Manchester City, and now Fabrizio Romano has given his spin on the story.
According to the Italian, the midfielder is set to have a discussion with Manchester City about his future and a potential departure from the Etihad this summer.
Understandably, news that Gundogan could be on the market this summer has put a number of elite clubs on alert such as Barcelona, a few German teams, and interestingly, Arsenal.
According to Romano, Arsenal are in the race to sign Gundogan, but, as with many reported transfers, this move is dependent on the Gunners’ Champions League status next season.
Sadly for Arsenal, it doesn’t seem likely that they’ll be playing in UEFA’s premier competition next summer after their defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on Monday gave Tottenham the advantage in the race for fourth.
Of course, as we all know, nothing in football is guaranteed, but the idea of Tottenham losing to Norwich on the final day of the season is rather far-fetched, especially with Champions League football on the line.
Gundogan may have only just been linked to Arsenal, but it’s already looking unlikely that he’ll actually be heading for the Emirates.
However, the same can’t be said for another Manchester City player looking for a move this summer.
Indeed, according to many sources including David Ornstein and Romano, Arsenal are in a good position to go out and sign Gabriel Jesus this summer, and who knows? Perhaps they could manage to convince Gundogan to join as well if they can land Jesus. After all, the pair are teammates at City and signing Jesus would be a statement of intent.
Keep an eye on Mikel Arteta moving for any more players from his former club this summer.
