Loan star Jamie Murphy scored his first goal for Rangers at the weekend and celebrated wildly.

The 28-year-old struck in the closing stages of Rangers’ 6-1 Scottish Cup quarter-final win over Ayr.

The strike is a weight off Murphy’s shoulders and can provide him with the freedom he needs to take his game at Rangers to a new level.

On loan from Brighton, Murphy knows he needs to make an impression if he is to ensure Rangers buy him permanently.

If anything he has been trying a little too hard in his opening games, and the goal will come as a relief.

Manager Graeme Murty said after the game that Murphy is still getting up to speed.

He told The Record: “He was outstanding. He gives us understanding, quality and incredible work rate even though he’s not fully fit yet. There’s more to come from him and the squad.”

Murphy can now move forward with added confidence and the whole team will be feeling positive after their big victory.

The winger has the potential to be Rangers’ best signing of the transfer window, although he has so far been overshadowed by Sean Goss and Jason Cummings.

This weekend Murphy took a big step forward and he should not have to try too hard to force success with the pressure of opening his account now gone.
