It is looking increasingly unlikely that Everton’s caretaker manager David Unsworth will be given the job permanently following a run of poor results.

The 4-1 Premier League defeat to Southampton at the weekend was the club’s fifth loss in seven matches in all competitions since Unsworth took charge from Ronald Koeman on a temporary basis.

The 44-year-old has dropped down to 22/1 in the odds with Skybet to be given the role and if the former defender wants to continue a career in management it looks like he will have to do it away from Goodison Park.

Which is what former Toffees and current West Ham United boss David Moyes has advised Unsworth to do, telling him to drop down into the lower leagues to build his reputation.

“If he doesn’t take the Everton job, I think I would be telling Unsy to go and manage somewhere and earn your corn,” Moyes told the Guardian.

“If you want to move on, go and get a job in the Championship or League One. I think there has been a generation of really good players out there who I believe should go and manage and try and come up.”

However, has Unsworth already harmed his chances of even getting a job in the Championship having overseen such a disastrous tenure on Merseyside?

The responsibility for these current problems do not lie solely at the feet of the interim, of course, but Everton have arguably gotten worse and certainly no better since Koeman was sacked and the Englishman took charge.

Relegation-threatened Sunderland have recently appointed Chris Coleman, for example, following his time as the most successful Wales manager in history as he took the nation to the semi-finals of Euro 2016. If Unsworth had been available, would he really have been considered?
