Wojciech Szczesny may not have an Arsenal spot to go back to.
Wojciech Szczesny – Arsenal
Wojciech Szczesny won praise early into his Arsenal career for his fearless performances stepping up to the first team.
As time went on his confidence turned into a cocky type of arrogance, and mistakes crept into his game.
Arsene Wenger came to the realisation that the club could do better, and signed Petr Cech.
Cech is not likely to be an option too many seasons longer, but Szczesny decided he was not going to sit on the bench and wait it out, and pushed for a loan move instead.
He has spent two mixed seasons at Roma, where he has been first choice, but been on the wrong end of some heavy scorelines and made errors too. It has hardly been smooth, but his reputation is pretty much where it was when he left.
Arsenal since added David Ospina, who could be off this summer to pursue first team football, but more of relevance to Szczesny is the recent display of Emiliano Martinez.
Arsenal’s Emiliano Martinez makes a save
Martinez made his Arsenal debut in 2012, but has been on four loan spells in the lower leagues, filling in only occasionally for the Gunners.
He has never let them down, with his clean sheet against West Ham his third in his last four appearances.
The 24-year-old has surely shown enough now to display that he is the dependable deputy Arsenal need to Petr Cech, and even a long term successor.
This asks further questions over Szczesny’s role when his loan spell ends, and could effectively end his Arsenal career for good.
