Newcastle United’s deal for Tammy Abraham appears no closer, despite reports earlier this month it was days away from being completed.

SkySports reported this week that Abraham is still undecided on his future, and is focusing on starring for England at the under-21 championships which begin on Friday.

Abraham will be due a break after the finals, and would not be ready at the start of pre-season for Newcastle in any case.

Brighton are also battling to sign him, but the real goal for the striker has to be making the breakthrough at Chelsea.

Big questions remain over the futures of Chelsea forwards Diego Costa and Michy Batshuayi, with the Blues keen on signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

Negotiations to sign the Everton forward are no closer to getting over the line, holding up decisions at Stamford Bridge.

Abraham is at the back of the queue, and Newcastle can’t afford to wait around.

The fixture list being announced hands Newcastle a tough opening game against Tottenham but a run of very winnable fixtures after that. There is a great opportunity for the club to make a very fast start, and they need to start getting their transfer business done.

This means looking towards a permanent striker signing now, and revisiting Abraham later in the summer for a potential loan if he remains available.
