Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with an Ajax defender but they should have moved for another prior to his Crystal Palace switch.
According to a report from the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in £35million-rated Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez, but one wonders why Spurs did not go all out to sign his former teammate Jairo Reidewald for a fraction of that fee.
As reported by the Daily Mail earlier this summer, Riedewald opted to move to the Eagles rather than Tottenham due to a chance of more playing time at Selhurst Park. But when you consider his talent and versatility, Spurs should have given him the reassurances he needed to get a deal over the line.
Sanchez is not going to make a £35million move only to sit on the bench, so the same could have been the case with Riedewald, whose versatility means he could have operated at centre-back, right-back or holding midfield in North London.
With Tottenham in four competitions this season Riedewald would have got plenty of chances, and for a snip at just £7.9million (as reported by the Guardian).
The 20-year-old has quickly settled at Palace, impressing during pre-season and showing a composure on the ball that belies his age yet highlights his schooling at the famous Ajax academy.
Riedewald would have been the ideal Daniel Levy signing – cheap as chips with potential in bucket-loads – and in contrast a £35million move for Sanchez seems nothing short of bizarre.
