Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the 19-year-old but now PSG have entered the race.
According to a report from French newspaper L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on a deal for Juan Foyth, with the teenager set to be the French side’s fourth-choice centre-back next season. However, that goes against a recent claim that Tottenham Hotspur had been told in their own negotiations for the player that Estudiantes want him straight back in a six-month loan deal.
Earlier this week, the Times reported that Tottenham would have to agree to an initial loan-back and a sell-on clause if they wanted to complete a move for the Argentine this summer, so either that report is untrue or PSG may struggle to bring him in as early as next season.
Of course the French club have the money to soothe over any potential issues with Estudiantes, potentially offering a little extra to ensure they can call on Foyth from the outset. But one wonders if there are a few more twists and turns in this story before it reaches a resolution.
At first glance Tottenham do not need a new defender of their own, with Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Kevin Wimmer on their books.
However Foyth is regarded as a young gem and if Spurs can still negotiate a relatively cheap fee for the player (at least in today’s inflated market) it could be a long-term gamble that pays off for the next decade and beyond.
Tottenham looked to have sewn up a deal for Foyth before the latest reports of a PSG gazumping, and their fans will be hoping that by the time the transfer window slams shut their manager Mauricio Pochettino has the players he needs to push on after a superb campaign last time out.
