Aston Villa wanted to sign Michael Carrick, but the Championship side look set to miss out on the Manchester United star.

According to a recent report from ESPN, Aston Villa were amongst the host of sides interested in Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick as he approached the end of his contract at Old Trafford.

Unfortunately for the Villans, ESPN reports that Carrick has no plans to move away from United in the near future, so it appears that Steve Bruce will have to look elsewhere if he wants to add some top flight experience to his midfield.

If he is still keen to find a Premier League midfielder who can potentially boost their promotion hopes in the second tier, perhaps it may be worth taking a look at Charlie Adam’s situation after his recent comments to Sky Sports.

The 31-year-old has been on the pitch for just a handful of minutes all season in the top flight. And while he admitted that he wanted to stay with Stoke, he hinted that his desire to stick around may change if his game-time does not increase.

“I want to stay but I want to be playing as well so we’ll wait and see what happens. It is frustrating but we’ll see what happens,” he told Sky Sports.

Given the Scotsman’s comments, it may well be worth Villa keeping an eye on his situation during the coming weeks as a move to a team where he is almost guaranteed regular minutes will surely appeal if he is still on the periphery with the Potters, and Villa continue their ascent up the table and look to be just a few months away from securing promotion back to the top flight come January.

The fact that Villa were keen to sign Carrick hints that they would have the resources to potentially sign Adam if he did become available – and he would arguably be a fantastic addition to their ranks if they could pull a deal off.
