Might Lee Cattermole be the combative midfielder Rangers could do with at Ibrox?

New Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha has begun making an impact at the club by demanding more aggression out of his players.

Quoted by The Scotsman last month Caixinha said this was the one pre-requisite he has for his teams, demanding an attitude shift.

Rangers might have dispatched their most aggressive player long before Caixinha’s arrival, with Joey Barton discarded just weeks into his spell at the club.

If he is looking for an ‘aggressive’ player to add then this summer, he need look no further than Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole.

Cattermole has missed most of this season with injury, recently returning, and the Black Cats have struggled badly without him.

The midfielder’s career is at a crossroads with Sunderland set to be relegated, and Rangers could offer him a new challenge.

Cattermole is often referred to as a walking red card, although has picked up only four in his career, managing to tread the line carefully, despite picking up 97 yellows.

The 29-year-old evokes a passionate response from home and away fans, and could be Rangers’ answer to Scott Brown.

Caixinha is making the best of his squad for now, but needs a midfield dynamo to set the tone for how he wants his team to play.

He could do worse than adding Cattermole, who would be ideal for his preferred style. It can’t possibly end more farcically than Mark Warburton’s decision to sign Joey Barton last summer.
