Has Alan Judge’s Newcastle United chance passed?

The Brentford midfielder was strongly linked with a move to St James’ Park in each of the last two transfer windows, but is still awaiting a return to action having broken his leg 11 months ago.

Out of contract in June, Judge seemed destined to move for a bargain price, but his slow recovery looks to have aided the Bees’ chances of keeping him at Griffin Park.

“I’ll find out what’s going to happen [with his contract] in the next week or so,” Judge told the Irish Times. “I’ll make a decision, but Brentford to me, at this moment in time, feels like the right place to be.

“They’ve been good to me and I feel that when I’ve been playing I’ve been good for them, so we fit now and leaving when my last game was the one where I broke my leg never felt completely right.

“Hopefully you’ll see a bit of news in the next few days.”

With Newcastle seemingly heading back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, one would have thought Judge would be keen to keep his options open this summer.

The Magpies, however, will perhaps have bigger fish to fry once promotion is confirmed, irrespective of Judge’s availability – with Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson the latest name linked.

And committing to Brentford would perhaps be the biggest sign yet that the 28-year-old has conceded any ambition he might have had to play for Rafa Benitez’s team.

Should Newcastle United still consider Judge if they go up?
