Should Everton move for Jermain Defoe?

In the past week Everton have been linked with a £50m double swoop for La Liga forwards William Jose and Cedric Bakambu, by The Sun.
Yet both players have combined to score fewer league goals than Sunderland ace Jermain Defoe has this season, who may prove a far shrewder bargain.
Defoe has 14 goals in 28 games for the Black Cats this season, even at the age of 34 still proving he can still cut it at the top level.
A move may feel like a bit of a stop gap, but if Everton are serious about taking the next step, then signing a proven Premier League goalscorer would be a very sensible decision.

Interestingly, Everton have already shown this is a type of deal they would be willing to consider, by moving for Swansea City veteran Ashley Williams last summer.
Williams turns 33 in August, yet has been superb for the Toffees this season in marshalling their backline.
Manager Ronald Koeman has shown he is willing to consider players at both ends of the spectrum, and Defoe could be a very useful player for young talent Ademola Lookman to learn from.
Defoe would also provide Everton with some insurance if Romelu Lukaku did force an exit, and the club would know they have a more than capable striker ready to lead the line.
A more long term option should also be a priority, but Defoe could be just what Everton need to try and bridge the gap to the top six in the short term.
