The Tottenham Hotpsur right-back is so much more than a decent back-up option.

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier put in another impressive performance at the weekend as his side overcame Fulham 3-0 in the third round of the FA Cup.

The 26-year-old has gone from being an ever-present at Burnley to a fringe player at White Hart Lane, but he never lets that disappointment affect his game when he is granted a start.

To date, Trippier has featured just 30 times for Spurs but he has s till managed six assists and a string of fine showings in that time.

The defender’s latest performance speaks volumes for his character but it also proves that at this stage of his career he should not be wasting his time as a back-up at best.

Tottenham cannot be blamed for ensuring they have sufficient strength in depth in key areas. However with Kyle Walker the undisputed first choice in North London, Trippier’s circumstances do not look like changing any time soon.

The only way he will get to fulfil his potential is if he moves on and for the good of his career he should push for that this summer.

Footballers only get a limited time at the top and Trippier deserves to be remembered for being more than just an ever-reliable substitute.

Tottenham may not agree but unless Walker moves on what alternative does Trippier really have?
