After Liverpool’s 5-2 loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, Aurelien Tchouameni’s decision to join Real Madrid over Liverpool in the summer transfer window looks entirely vindicated.

As many will remember, Liverpool did hold talks with Tchouameni about a move in the summer, but the player chose to join Real Madrid instead. The midfielder even discussed his decision-making process with Le Parisien.

“The first to come forward was Liverpool. We had discussions,” said Tchouameni. “Then Real arrived. And in my head everything was clear. It was Real and not another. It’s the biggest club in the world.

“If you claim to accomplish great things, to mark the history of your sport, there is no better. So I didn’t hesitate for a second. I told my agent: as long as there is interest, we do everything to go there. I was already conditioned. When Paris showed up, my choice was already made, even if I was happy to be approached by PSG.”

At the time, this looked a controversial decision. After all, Liverpool had come within a couple of goals of winning the quadruple last season and he could’ve been the lynchpin in this team for years to come.

But, just a few months on from being linked to Liverpool, Tchouameni must believe he made the best decision of his career when snubbing the Reds.

Liverpool’s current struggles in the Premier League have been well-documented this season. They currently sit eighth in the table and have struggled in midfield.

Meanwhile, Tchouameni has settled in quickly at the Bernabeu and has become a key player for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. He has impressed with his strength, composure and passing ability in the heart of the midfield, and while Madrid haven’t been amazing this season, they’re doing much better than their Merseyside counterparts.

Given his performances and the drop-off in form from the Reds, it is clear that Tchouameni made the right decision in picking the Spanish giants over Liverpool, and Tuesday evening’s emphatic win must have been cathartic for the young Frenchman.
