Venancio impressed while on loan to Sheffield Wednesday last season.
Were it not for a transfer embargo, Frederico Venancio would probably have been a Sheffield Wednesday player.
According to their manager, Jos Luhukay, Wednesday held talks to sign Venancio permanently after his loan from Vitoria Setubal expired (official club Facebook page).
And the centre-back himself admitted that he had ‘fallen in love’ with the Owls and wanted to return.
But as the weeks and months progressed and Sheffield Wednesday remained hamstrung in the transfer market, Venancio moved to another Vitoria, Guimaraes, instead.
With Venancio in the side last season, Wednesday kept clean sheets in seven out of 20 Championship matches. Since then they have managed just two in 22.
But things have not gone great for him either. An injury ruled the 25-year-old out of Guimaraes’s first four league fixtures, and despite being fit since then, he has remained consigned to the substitutes’ bench – making his only appearances (three of them) in the cup.
Now out of their embargo – although not out of the woods yet as far as the English Football League are concerned – could (and should) the Owls try their luck again in January?
