Should Newcastle United return for Saido Berahino of West Brom?
West Bromwich Albion may already be ruing not cashing in on Saido Berahino when they had the chance.
The former England under-21 striker has had a loss of form, confidence and fitness, and his contract is set to expire in June.
It is coming up to 12 months ago that Newcastle United had a staggering £24 million bid rejected for the striker.
West Brom’s Saido Berahino
Desperate to avoid relegation, Newcastle tried to sign Berahino in the last January transfer window but West Brom flatly refused the bid.
It is hard to say either way whether Berahino would have been a difference maker, but at West Brom he has struggled since the bid was rejected.
He has scored just one goal in 17 Premier League matches since, and this evening was due to line up for the Baggies under-23 side in an effort to get back on track.
West Brom’s Saido Berahino looks dejected after the game
A move away from the Baggies looks like Berahino’s best possible option at this point in the hope a change of scene could kickstart his career.
West Brom still believe in the 23-year-old, with the Express and Star reporting this week they have not given up hope of him signing a new deal.
As it stands, the Baggies are at risk of losing out on their rough diamond, and Newcastle should consider snapping him up on a Bosman.
There would still be a fee to pay possibly via a tribunal, but it would be substantially less than the £24 million they bid for him last summer.
Newcastle are odds on to return to the Premier League this season, currently sitting at top of the Championship, and getting a fully committed and firing Berahino in would be a major asset to them next season.
