Newcastle United’s strong start to the season has slipped away in recent weeks, and manager Rafael Benitez appears to be missing defender Jamaal Lascelles right now.

The Magpies have picked up just one point in their last five games, and whilst Lascelles featured in the 1-0 defeats to Burnley and Bournemouth – though went off injured before Bournemouth’s goal in that game – his absence has been key.

Lascelles has been forced to watch on as Newcastle have conceded nine goals in three games without him, and Magpies fans surely can’t wait for him to return.

Fans have been clamouring for him to be included in the England squad, but his impressive displays may just rekindle interest from one Premier League rival, especially if he continues to impress.

The Sun reported in November of last year that Chelsea were lining up an £18million move for Lascelles, given that they wanted to add a young defender, preferably from England for homegrown quota reasons in Europe.

The Blues have since added German ace Antonio Rudiger as well as promotion Danish star Andreas Christensen, but with questions over Gary Cahill’s performances and David Luiz’ future, another defender may yet be targeted.

If Chelsea were considering Lascelles in the Championship, then his Premier League displays may well have convinced them to retain their interest in the former Nottingham Forest ace.

With exceptional leadership an inspirational ability at the age of just 24, Lascelles looks to have a big future ahead of him – and if he continues to star for Newcastle, the Magpies may just receive some interest in their star defender.
