Reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has tweeted that Tottenham Hotspur are at an ‘advanced’ stage in their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matt Doherty.
Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for the Wolves star in recent days.
Football London reported that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has identified him as a solution for the right-back issue that has caused the team some trouble since Kyle Walker left three years ago.
The North Londoners have already signed Joe Hart and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer.
And, according to Romano, a deal for the Irishman is close now too.
This might accelerate rumours about Serge Aurier leaving the club.
The Ivorian has been linked with a switch to AC Milan in recent weeks and if Doherty joins the Lilywhites, it could well offset Aurier’s move to San Siro.
The 28-year-old is probably a big upgrade on the former Paris Saint-Germain right-back, and last season he managed seven goals and five assists which, for a right-back, is a very decent return.
