Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel has told The Telegraph that he didn’t know West Ham United’s Aaron Cresswell recommended him for a move to Anfield until he made the move.

The Reds allowed Simon Mignolet to leave for Club Brugge over the summer, so they needed to go and bring in a backup goalkeeper to offer cover behind Alisson.

Liverpool chose to sign Adrian after his West Ham contract came to an end, and that proved to be a key move just minutes into the new season as Alisson picked up a calf injury on the opening day against Norwich City.

Adrian came on for the Brazilian and has deputised for him ever since, making eight Premier League appearances and two in the Champions League.

Adrian has kept two clean sheets for Liverpool, but could now lose his place against Manchester United as Alisson is back fit and ready to return to action once again.

It now turns out that Adrian’s move to Liverpool came to fruition because goalkeeping coach John Achterberg spoke to Cresswell given that they knew each other from their time at Tranmere Rovers.

Cresswell – a boyhood Liverpool fan – spent five years playing alongside Adrian at West Ham, and allegedly gave Achterberg a glowing recommendation about Adrian as well as his phone number to facilitate a deal.

Adrian has admitted he didn’t actually know that was the case until Achterberg told him after he signed, and the Spaniard thanked his former Hammers teammate for helping him earn the move to Merseyside.

“I didn’t know that at the time but after I signed he told me,” said Adrian. “So thank you, ‘Cress’, because he had a good word for me!” he added.
