It’s probably a bit indicative of Tottenham Hotspur’s long-term lack of a plan-b option up front that Roberto Soldado still might get a game for them at the moment.

Spurs host Chelsea in the Premier League tonight but with no Harry Kane, it remains to be seen how Jose Mourinho’s side – who lost to Brighton last time around – will fare.

Carlos Vinicius could and should get the nod to spearhead the attack for what would be a full Premier League debut for the Benfica loanee, but the fact that he’s only managed 68 minutes in this competition might suggest that Mourinho is yet to be convinced by him.

Kane has been the main man in North London since 2014 and ever since then, the Lilywhites have tried and failed to sign an adequate back-up, with Vinicius joining the likes of Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen in being hugely inferior goalscorers in comparison to the England international.

You could argue that this trend started with Soldado, who joined Tottenham just before Kane broke through.

And seven goals in 52 Premier League games suggests that it didn’t quite go to plan for the Spain international, but he was still a popular player with the White Hart Lane faithful – and that remains the case.

Soldado scored for Granada in a Copa Del Rey defeat by Barcelona on Wednesday night, firing them 2-0 ahead at the time.

And here’s how some Spurs fans reacted to the 35-year-old’s goal:
