The Everton teenager deserves more chances to show what he can do at Goodison Park.
Shortly after Ademola Lookman’s arrival at Goodison Park, Everton fans got a tantalising glimpse of what he is capable of as he scored within minutes of coming off the bench against Manchester City, his calm strike adding gloss to a 4-0 score-line that spoke of better things to come.
Despite that impressive contribution, the teenager struggled for significant game time thereafter and was overlooked in favour of Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the business end of the campaign.
So it will have been a timely reminder when Lookman scored a brace against Costa Rica to seal England’s place in the quarter-finals of the U20 World Cup, with the composure showed for both strikes enough to prove he deserves far more chances at Everton next season and beyond.
Toffees manager Ronald Koeman will be aware of his inexperience and the need to bring him through slowly. However, on the evidence of the match against City and his outstanding contribution this week for his country, his time is now.
It was not just that the Everton youngster scored two goals in a massive game for his country, it is how he scored those goals.
Other players may have snatched at the chances of shot too soon, but Lookman’s brain was as fast as his feet and it is that innate talent that means he showed be given a starring role for Everton sooner rather than later.
He may only be 19 but Lookman is a class act and he should not be side-lined any longer.
