Writing in his Team of the Week column on the Premier League’s website, Alan Shearer has been discussing Darwin Nunez after a solid performance against Southampton at the weekend.
Nunez was one of the Reds’ most important players at the weekend. He netted two goals as the Merseyside club secured back-to-back wins, and he was probably the Man of the Match.
Nunez has looked like a different player recently as Liverpool have transitioned to more of a 4-4-2 diamond formation, and Shearer says that the player is adapting brilliantly to his manager’s new system.

Nunez adapting brilliantly
Shearer hailed Nunez after his brace against Southampton.
“Crowned an impressive display with a first-half brace. He is adapting brilliantly to Klopp’s new system,” Shearer wrote.
Built for him
Klopp’s new formation feels as though it’s custom-made for Nunez to thrive.
Indeed, Klopp hasn’t used a two-striker formation at Liverpool in the six years he’s been here, but now, he’s made the change in order to accommodate Nunez.
Sadly for the Uruguayan, this probably won’t be a long-term change as Luis Diaz will surely return to the left wing once he’s back from injury, but, for now, he’s being given the perfect platform to shine.
The Uruguayan is such a unique player who probably needs a team built around him for his talents to shine, and that’s exactly what he has at Liverpool in this very moment.
Klopp is slowly but surely figuring out how to get the best out of Nunez, but now, he needs to work on utilising him in a 4-3-3 as the Reds look to transition back to their preferred shape in the new year once Diaz and Diogo Jota are back.
