Kundai Benyu recently joined Celtic following his departure from Ipswich Town.

Celtic recently completed the signing of Kundai Benyu. The 19-year-old midfielder has joined the Scottish Premiership giants on a four-year contract following his departure from Ipswich Town in the Championship at the end of last month.

The youngster failed to make a single appearance in the Championship for Ipswich, but the midfielder played well during a loan spell at Aldershot Town.

As reported by BBC Sport, Benyu scored five goals in 23 appearances for the National League club during his loan spell.

Adam Virgo is well-known pundit who knows the Championship and the lower leagues of English football inside out.

The former Celtic and Brighton & Hove Albion player, who is 34 years of age and now works as a pundit for talkSPORT and BT Sport, has spoken highly of Benyu and has compared him to Shunsuke Nakamura.

Nakamura, on the books of Jubilo Iwata at the moment, played for Celtic from 2005 until 2009 and is regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders to have ever featured for the Glasgow giants.

“The thing I found about him was when he was on the ball he had a very good first touch and he was happy to have the ball when people were around him,” Virgo told The Scottish Sun about Benyu. “He doesn’t possess a lot of pace, he’s not like Aiden McGeady or Shaun Maloney.

“He’s quite slow in what he does but he’s very good at it if that makes sense. I personally think his best position is the number 10 role. I don’t think he possesses enough pace to play on the wings.

“But if Brendan plays him in the right position he can be very effective and I think he’s somebody that fans will take to him. He’s the type of player to get people off their feet.”

“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but he reminds me of Shunsuke Nakamura,” added Virgo. “He’s got that elegance on the ball in terms of what Celtic fans would really understand.

“He’s just a player with a great touch and a good turn and he’s got everything all around him in the game. He can pick out a pass and he’s got a good eye for goal and he’s a great dribbler when he gets in the final third.”
