Lucas Herbert made history on day two of The Open.

His front nine score of 28 tied an Open Championship record score, and he shot a 62 over 18 holes to tie the major championship scoring record.

Herbert had a short putt on the 18th to break the record, but he heartbreakingly missed it, and will have to settle for the tie. He does hold the lead going into the weekend at eight under par.

This round caught the attention of players up and down the field, including fellow Australian Adam Scott.

Scott, playing in his 101st major championship, has seen it all, including the entire career of 30-year-old Herbert.

Speaking after his round, Scott spoke about the improvement he’s seen in Herbert, which has allowed him to shoot a 62 at Royal Birkdale.

Scott said, “He’s got a lot of game. He’s a big, strong guy. This is a pretty out there comment because I don’t know his game inside and out, but I would fancy him around a links.

“I see him playing shots. So when he’s on, I feel like the links kind of would really suit him because he can be creative and get more reward for it on the links rather than some other tracks.

“I think he grew up down in Melbourne, as well, on some firm and fast conditions. I’d say he’s probably got a pretty high level of comfort for it.”

Professional golf, especially LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, very rarely visits links golf courses, so maybe we’d evaluate the talent of players totally differently if they did go to these types of courses more often.

Herbert’s game is certainly suited to these conditions, and he’ll now be well in the mix to win the Claret Jug over the weekend.
