The Jack Ross favourite left the Stadium of Light after being released by the Black Cats at the end of last season.

Adam Matthews has spoken of his relief at putting a “tough summer” behind him after being released by Sunderland and is eager to kick on with new employers Charlton Athletic (official Addicks website).
The Wales defender, 27, was released the by Black Cats in the summer after having made 28 appearances for the League One club in the 2018-19 season.
Sunderland boss Jack Ross had always spoken highly of Matthews – he told The Chronicle a few months ago that he was the best full-back at the club – but as one of the last players on a contract signed in the Premier League era and the club looking to reduce their wage bill, it perhaps was not all that surprising to see him released.
“I’m excited,” said Matthews. “It’s been a tough summer for me personally, not knowing what was going to happen, so I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to come and train with the boys. I want to kick on now and, firstly, stay in the division, but the lads have started really well, so hopefully we can keep that going.”

Matthews, who began his career at Cardiff City, joined Sunderland from Celtic in 2015 but struggled to establish himself in the Black Cats first team before departing on loan to Bristol City.
However, he returned to play a big role at the club in the Championship season and was involved as the Wearside outfit narrowly missed out on promotion from League One last term.
Lee Bowyer’s Addicks are second in the Championship table after winning four and drawing two of their first six games.
