Sunderland defender Adam Matthews did not make an appearance last season, but Simon Grayson has given him a chance over pre-season.
Moyes appeared to write off Matthews’ chances of making a success of his career at the Stadium of Light.
The full-back did not feature at all for Sunderland last term, after he was sent out on loan to Bristol City.
And Matthews admits that if Moyes had remained as Sunderland manager he days with the Wearsiders were limited.
“He [new boss Simon Grayson] has given everyone a chance, he’s given a few of the youngsters a chance so he’s been brilliant, he’s been good because I think if (David) Moyes was still here I wouldn’t be,” Matthews said.
“I’m thankful to him for giving me a chance and hopefully he sees something in me that one or two of the other managers haven’t.”
Matthews has now been handed plenty of chances over pre-season, as Grayson assesses his options at the Stadium of Light.
While Matthews is far from certain of a place in the Black Cats’ team next term, there is a glimmer of hope for the defender.
Sunderland have strengthened at the back, but it seems that Grayson is taking his time to judge the quality of each player in his squad at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland get their Championship campaign under way when they take on Derby County at the start of August.
