Nottingham Forest had three bids rejected by Brondby for Frederik Ronnow – so signed Adam Federici from Bournemouth instead.

After spending almost the entire summer desperately trying to sign a new goalkeeper, Nottingham Forest finally got a shot-stopper through the doors at the City Ground on deadline day in the shape of Adam Federici.

An experienced glovesman who won promotion twice to the Premier League with Reading, the Australian international looked like a fine addition after two years warming the Bournemouth bench.

However, just 12 days after putting pen to paper on a season-long loan, Federici has returned to the South Coast after picking up a knee injury on international duty – meaning he has departed Forest without making a single appearance for the club.

Therefore, if Forest were already frustrated at their failure to land Danish international Frederik Ronnow, news of Federici’s injury blow only adds to the disappointment.

The highly-rated Brondby goalkeeper emerged as Forest’s number one target in the final few weeks of the transfer window. However, Mark Warburton’s side were unable to bring in the five-time international despite making three bids for his services, the final offer weighing in at £2.4 million, per the Nottingham Post.

The report adds that, while Forest’s bid was near Brondby’s valuation of the 25-year-old, Ronnow himself was not keen on the idea of moving to England’s second tier.

But Forest may wish they had managed to persuade him otherwise. Ronnow is one of the most talented goalkeepers in Scandinavia and, if it wasn’t for a certain Kasper Schmeichel, would certainly be Denmark’s undisputed number one.

Instead, Forest will be hoping that academy prospect Jordan Smith maintains his impressive form between the sticks with Federici’s premature exit leaving the club short of quality alternatives.
