Adam Bogdan has admitted that he felt ‘awful’ for Loris Karius during his infamous performance for Liverpool when they lost the 2018 Champions League final to Real Madrid.

Karius, who is now on-loan at Turkish side Besiktas [BBC Sport], made a number of costly errors during the game, as Liverpool missed their chance, at the time, of winning their sixth European crown.

But 12 months later, Jurgen Klopp’s side proved their worth as they beat Spurs in Madrid, with summer signing Alisson Becker keeping a clean sheet.

Former Reds man, Bogdan, who was released by the club in the summer, stated that he could ‘relate’ to how Karius would have felt as he believes that experience helped the club put things right the following season.

“I felt awful for him and for everybody. It’s never nice to see anybody make a mistake,” Bogdan told the Echo. “When a keeper does it, you can relate because it’s happened to you.

“You know what he would have felt and it must have been awful. It’s not good for anybody. it was an interesting day because everybody was so positive and believed we could win it and then it ran away from them.

“That experience of being in the final, dealing with the media attention and everything the final brings, helps Liverpool to win the Champions League last season.”

It has been some transformation from Liverpool at the back. Since Alisson’s signing last summer, their defence has gone from strength to strength and it could be argued they have the best backline in England’s top-flight.

Just before the international break, Klopp’s side secured their first clean sheet of the season when they beat Burnley at Turf Moor and they will be hoping for more of the same in these coming weeks.

Liverpool are the only team with a 100% record in the Premier League and next week, away at Napoli, they will also begin the defence of their European crown.
