Liverpool secured the signatures of two goalkeepers this summer in Adrian and Andy Lonergan.

Adam Bogdan has lauded Andy Lonergan for earning a deal with Liverpool this summer as he stated that it’s an ‘incredible’ story for a player that was recently playing in the lower divisions of English football last season.

In August, following the injury to first-choice goalkeeper Alisson, Liverpool signed Lonergan on a short-term contract [Liverpool’s official website] – he was playing for Rochdale last season.

He is yet to make his debut for the Merseyside club, as Adrian, who also joined the club in the summer, has been playing in between the sticks since Alisson’s injury.

Bogdan, 31, stated that he was pleased for Lonergan as he praised his work rate during training and the talents he has as a goalkeeper.

“I’m very, very happy for him,” Bogdan told The Echo. “He always really wanted to play in the Premier League. He’s been a great talent from the beginning and always a good goalkeeper.

“I spoke to him after the Sevilla. I thought it was incredible, what a story. It’s amazing, he was playing for Rochdale last season, Middlesbrough before that but not playing, and then he got a chance and he played.

“We were talking about how he’d done well but probably wouldn’t get a deal because they had enough keepers with Alisson back. Then something happens in the first game and he’s back. He works his socks off in training. He’s a very good goalkeeper otherwise he wouldn’t get the deal.”

When Alisson returns from his injury, Lonergan will more than likely become the third choice at the club, with Adrian taking his place on the bench as expected.

But it is a brilliant learning experience for the experienced keeper, who has made a serious jump up from England’s lower leagues to the European champions.

The end of September and onwards is set to be a busy period for Jurgen Klopp’s side because along with Premier League football, they will be participating in EFL Cup action and starting their defence of the Champions League.
