Could Newcastle fans have possibly caught a glimpse of a potential strike partnership during England’s first game in the Toulon Tournament?

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Rafa Benitez has his eye on Tammy Abraham as he prepares his Newcastle squad for their second year in the Premier League.

Abraham endured a difficult first year as a regular in the top flight, scoring five goals as Swansea City failed to stay up. Given his form, it would be little surprise if parent club Chelsea had few qualms about letting him leave on loan once again next season.

The striker’s form at the Liberty Stadium may not have captured the imagination, but he definitely has another chance to prove himself to potential suitors this summer having been included in England’s squad for the Toulon Tournament. And he has made an immediate impact in the Three Lions’ opening game.

It was Abraham who scored England’s last-gasp winner as they came from behind to avoid a banana skin defeat to China. And given who it was who set up Abraham’s goal, it may be little surprise if the winner caught Benitez’s attention as he continues his preparations for the window.

Adam Armstrong was very impressive in the win and got his rewards for a superb display by providing the assist after a smart run into the box. After an extremely impressive loan spell at Blackburn this past season, the run and cross was another reminder of just how much potential the Newcastle-owned forward possesses.

The 21-year-old has not managed to establish himself in the Newcastle first-team, but his form during a couple of loan spells has prompted the fans to ask for Benitez to give him a chance. The Chronicle recently reported that the Magpies could actually sell Armstrong this summer, but if they do not, then perhaps there is a chance that England’s winner has provided Newcastle fans with a glimpse of a potential future strike partnership should they keep Armstrong and perhaps get Abraham during the window.

If he does stay, next season may come too soon for Armstrong to play any kind of prominent role at St James’ Park. But if they do bring Abraham in – and for longer than a season-long loan – perhaps the pair could end up lining up alongside each other on a more regular basis in the future.
