It’s no secret that Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is a tad unorthadox.
In fact, he joined the Elland Road club back in 2018 after already earning the nickname El Loco – the crazy one.
And the legendary Argentine coach seemed to live up to that nickname on Wednesday, according to Leeds hitman Patrick Bamford.
Bielsa’s side slumped to a surprise 1-0 defeat to Brighton in West Yorkshire last weekend.
And with a bit of time off ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Newcastle, the former Lazio and Athletic Bilbao boss seemingly cancelled training yesterday – well, normal training.
Bamford, a £10 million signing in 2018, has revealed to Leeds’ official podcast that instead of a regular session at Thorp Arch, Bielsa wanted a bonding day and organised a head-tennis tournament for the Whites players.
He said: “Wednesday was actually weird, we had a day of head tennis tournaments, which is like unheard of, in our training. So, I think it was trying to boost the spirits a little bit, obviously we had some players playing in the Under-23s the other day. But in general, I think everyone is upbeat.”
Being 65, Bielsa has been around the game a long time and if he feels that Wednesday’s session is better for morale than a regular day of training then that certainly has to be trusted and it’ll be interesting to see if it has a positive effect at St James’s Park next week.
