Southampton’s official Twitter account has hit back at Tottenham after a tweet regarding Gareth Bale.

A popular social media trend has been doing the rounds recently, in which one picture from the past is captioned ‘how it started’ before a photo from the present is labelled ‘how it’s going’.

Tottenham jumped on the bandwagon by posting a tweet of Bale as a youngster in training, before posting a more recent one of him.

Southampton hit back at that tweet by posting their own picture of the 83-cap Wales international as a young boy, captioned ‘how it actually started’ – cheeky.

The Saints do deserve the credit for launching the four-time Champions League winner’s career.

They handed Bale his professional debut at 16 years and 275 days in a Championship game against Millwall on April 17, 2006.

Just one year and one month later, Tottenham signed him for an appearance-related fee of £10 million, according to ESPN.

Both sides deserve applause for their roles in Bale’s development on his way to becoming a world-class player.

As well as his four Champions League titles, the Cardiff-born attacker has also won La Liga twice, the Copa del Rey and the FIFA Club World Cup among other titles.

However, if we’re going to talk about how it all started, we can’t stray away from St Mary’s.
