Speaking on the Robbie Fowler Podcast, Jamie Carragher has shown his sympathy towards Thiago Alcantara after his start to life at Anfield.
Carragher says that he feels sorry for Thiago because injuries have meant that he’s had to continuously change his role, and as you can imagine, that can be unsettling for a player, especially in a new league in a different country.
Carragher was asked whether or not he thinks Thiago is more suited to the Champions League, to which he replied:
“Yeah I think that’s pretty obvious, yeah I think so. There’s no doubt about that when you come in and see him play. I actually feel a bit sorry for him. Because he’s played two or three different roles in midfield, he’s played the deepest position and now he’s playing a bit higher.
“I thought he was very good against Leipzig and you just think of the knock-on effect of having Fabinho next to him, and what that will do to his game, because I think Fabinho is as good as anyone in Europe.”
Carragher has every reason to feel sorry for Thiago.
Any player who’s joined Liverpool in recent years has been able to join a club that was flying high and riding the crest of a wave, but if we’re being brutally honest, the Reds have been a bit of a mess this season.
Injuries have ripped their squad to bits, and that’s affected Thiago’s ability to settle in, while he’s also suffered with injuries himself.
Unfortunately, it’s not been the dream start for the Spain international, but we can only hope that things get better next season.
