Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, former England women’s international Farrah Williams has been discussing Liverpool and their star man Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk is undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the world, but after almost a year out of action, many were wondering whether or on the 30-year-old would be able to live up to the lofty standards he set before his injury.
Van Dijk has slotted back into the team with ease, but Williams believes he still isn’t quite at his best.
What’s been said?
Williams gave her view on van Dijk.
“For all the talk of van Dijk being the best defender in the world. Since returning from his injury, I actually don’t think he’s performed to his best yet and Liverpool’s back four certainly haven’t either. Both set-pieces in terms of the defending was awful. At 3-1 there were two counter-attacks that West Ham had that split the centre-halves. Defensively they don’t look as strong as they did two years ago when they won the league,” Williams said.

Harsh, but true
Upon first hearing this it sounds rather harsh to say that about van Dijk. After all, he’s been fantastic this season, but when you think about it, Williams is right.
At his best, the Dutchman is the best player in the Premier League. He won the PFA Player of the Year during the Reds’ title-winning season and when he’s on top form he’s unbeatable.
This season he has been sturdy, but let’s be honest, he’s not been the brick wall that he was a couple of years ago.
Van Dijk hasn’t been bad this season, but he can still move up a gear or two.
