Newcastle are said to be interested in signing James Maddison this January, when he returns from World Cup duty with England.
The Northern Echo believe Eddie Howe has made the Leicester talisman his No.1 target this winter, although Luke Edwards of the Daily Telegraph has now provided a fresh update.
What’s the story?
Well, it’s bad news for the Newcastle fans hoping to see Maddison at St James’ Park this January.
Edwards claims “well placed sources” have told him that a deal for the 26-year-old is “highly unlikely” to materialise in January.
The Daily Telegraph journalist adds that Newcastle could still make signings in the January transfer window, but it will not be a significant month for recruitment, and Maddison would be a “very, very expensive” deal to pull off.
It comes after the Leicester No.10 enjoyed an outstanding first half of the campaign with Leicester, scoring seven goals in 13 Premier League appearances, while also providing four assists.
The Foxes are said to want £60m for their midfield maestro, which would make Maddison Newcastle’s second most expensive signing ever, behind the £63m Alexander Isak.
Newcastle could get Maddison for less
In our view, Newcastle are right to wait for Maddison.
Of course, some may argue that a £60m January deal is worth it, seeing as his talent could be the difference between a place in the Champions League or the Europa League.
However, Maddison will only have 12 months remaining on his contract at the end of the season.
Therefore, Newcastle would presumably be able to wrap up a deal for much less than the current £60m asking price, while also giving the attacking midfielder a full pre-season to adapt to Howe’s tactics.
Having said that, be sure to keep an eye on Maddison in January, as anything is possible.
