Manuel Pellegrini got his first three Premier League points as West Ham United boss with 3-1 win over Marco Silva’s Everton.
West Ham United began life under Manuel Pellegrini with four consecutive losses and a series of terrible performances that left them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.
The 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers before the international break prompted Pellegrini to say: “I don’t think it is a bad start – it is a very bad start,” according to BBC Sport.
That is not what you want to hear from any boss, let alone one who has had a record amount of investment backing him.
But the Chilean was also adamant that things would turn around, saying: “In the training ground we are doing well, no lack of attitude. We have to take that work during the week to a game where there is that added pressure.
“It is just to four games – we won’t stop fighting now. We are just starting and will resolve that problem”
And the international break could have added pressure, with two weeks of no opportunities to correct things allowing a negative atmosphere to grow.
Instead, West Ham have bounced back at the first chance with a comfortable 3-1 win away at Everton – Marco Silva’s first defeat as Toffees boss – and Pellegrini’s comments afterwards show exactly what you get with such an experienced coach.
“I have a lot of years here, I wasn’t going to change for three or four results,” he told BBC Sport.
“We believe in what we are doing and we are not going to change. I said last time after we lost I will accept advice but I was not going to change what we are doing.”
That is the elite, experienced attitude that West Ham needed and it is the one they have got in Pellegrini: faith in what he is doing, no panicking, and backed up with everything coming together for a win at a difficult ground.
The 3-1 win was more than three points; it was reassurance that West Ham have got the tools to build something very promising.
