The appointment of Manuel Pellegrini shows that Everton could perhaps be aiming a little higher than Marco Silva.
It’s widely rumoured that Everton will announce the appointment of former Hull City and Watford boss Marco Silva, possibly as soon as next week, say SkySports.
Silva is the man that the Toffees not-so-subtly chased before settling for the ill-fitting Sam Allardyce last October and in that regard, finally getting their man is certainly a positive for the club.
Less positive is his track record; Silva has managed four clubs in four years, winning a Portuguese cup with Sporting and a Greek SuperLeague title with Olympiakos in that time.
That’s not too shabby, of course, but it doesn’t look overly exciting when compared to two of Everton’s rivals.
Newcastle and West Ham find themselves in similar positions to Everton this summer – all three are clubs with the potential to be challenging for European places but have suffered from mismanagement.
Despite that, however, both Newcastle and West Ham have secured elite managers to guide them while Everton are still taking something of a punt on Silva.

Managers in that bracket are hard to come by, of course, and it may simply be luck of the draw that has seen them crop up elsewhere, but it does hang over Everton’s claims of ambition as a dark cloud at this point.
The likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Luis Enrique, Laurent Blanc – even Arsene Wenger and Antonio Conte – are all without work at the moment, and all would provide the boost the club desperately needs right now.
