The Watford captain has recently admitted that he’s been playing in the Premier League with broken toes.

Watford have had a brilliant start to the season that sees them sitting in 4th in the Premier League with 13 points from their first six games – making them the sole reason the ‘big six’ hasn’t already taken shape.

A huge part of that success has been the continuity of the side; Javi Gracia has named the same starting eleven for all six of their games this season.

That statistic becomes all the more incredible, however, after captain Troy Deeney admitted that he played against Fulham with three broken toes.

“Two toes are broken now, one has healed,” said Deeney, quotes the Watford Observer.

“A young lad did it on Friday. A few lads said to him [about tackling on a Friday before a game], I just gave him a look that he needed to leave me alone for a minute.

“He is a good lad, one of the first team players and I do not want to throw him under the bus because he is one of the young lads.

“He was just trying to impress and get himself in the team. It wasn’t much but he stood on my toes. It is nothing an injection won’t heal and I have to have another one before Arsenal at the weekend.”

Deeney is showing the perfect attitude for a captain – although that can’t be easy considering he’s suffered broken toes as a result of the incident.

Understanding exactly why a young player would go a little too strong at training and then being cautious enough to not name him publicly is exactly what you’d want, and it’s difficult to think of more to ask of the club captain.

Watford are playing well, they’re having success, and they’ve clearly got the right spirit and attitude at the club right now – this could be a very exciting season for the Hornets.
