Recent reports suggest Tottenham Hotspur are looking at Napoli midfielder Allan.

Spurs have reportedly in the market for Napoli midfielder Allan, according to Calcio Napoli 24, with the Brazilian valued at €40million.

Allan would seem like a natural replacement for Mousa Dembele, whose contract expires at the end of the season, albeit an expensive one given he’s 27 years old.

Spurs have been linked with a move for Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele in the past, with L’Equipe reporting that they went as far as making an offer for the midfielder.

Moving away from a 21-year-old talent to a player firmly in his prime would suggest that Spurs are looking for immediate impact, rather than having the patience for a young talent to settle and fulfil his potential.

Given their current side, that’s likely a very sensible move; if Dembele does leave at the end of the season, their average age would drop quite considerably, meaning the experience of Allan would be a lot more valuable.

Most importantly, however, it shows a desire to take advantage of their current crop of players who are all in and around their prime years.

Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane, Lucas Moura, and Son Heung-Min are all 25 or 26 and likely to be playing the best football of their careers over the next couple of years.

Jan Vertonghen, Hugo Lloris, and if he sticks around, Toby Alderweireld, will all be into their 30’s come the end of the season and the time to take advantage of them is running out.

And so Spurs likely should be looking at players in their prime, rather than young talents – this is their most exciting squad for a long, long time and they need to make the most of that.
