Tottenham Hotspur will be waiting to see the future for six other players before knowing if a move for Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong is viable.
The Telegraph’s report on Monday that Tottenham Hotspur are looking at Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong is one that should excite the fans.
De Jong has established himself as one of the most noteworthy young midfielders in Europe and it’s of no surprise that Mauricio Pochettino’s side see him as an ideal addition to their team.
They’re not the only ones, however, and as was confirmed by Ajax director Marc Overmars recently, Barcelona hold a firm interest in De Jong too.
Barcelona’s interest appears to be dependent on other players, though, and De Jong remains simply one of a few targets for the Spanish champions.
Paul Pogba and Adrien Rabiot both remain somewhat-viable options for Barca and may take priority over De Jong as the club looks to sign two of the three. Should Pogba and Rabiot end up at Camp Nou, it looks likely that Spurs would be favourites.
Although, it’s still not that simple. Barca have undergone a change in midfield this summer, replacing Andres Iniesta and Paulinho with Arthur and Arturo Vidal – it remains to be seen how they settle, and how they do or don’t would surely impact the number of midfielder’s Barcelona would want to sign.
On top of that, Paris Saint-Germain have made a lot of noise over a move for Ivan Rakitic and should he eventually decide to move, it would change things again for Barca.
From Spurs’ position, recent reports indicate a desire to sign Hector Herrera from FC Porto – and his demands and expectations would have to impact any other midfield signings.
If Spurs want De Jong, they’ll likely have to wait to see what Barcelona’s situation is when the time comes, as well as their own – in the meantime, they can try and work out a way to use Barca’s hesitancy to their own advantage.
